A.C.P. Autoridad del Canal de Panama

The authority responsible for the operation and management of the Panama Canal.

A/P Additional Premium

An extra charge added to an insurance premium due to increased risk factors during transport.

A/S After Sight

A term indicating that payment on a draft is due at a stated period after the draft has been presented to the drawee.

AA Always Afloat

A contract term requiring that the vessel not rest on the ground at any port or berth.

AA AA Always Afloat, Always Accessible

A chartering term ensuring the vessel will be able to load, unload, and navigate without running aground regardless of the tide.

AB Able Seaman

A member of the merchant marine deck crew with specialized skills and experience.

Abaft

A maritime term meaning toward the rear or stern of the ship.

Abaft the Beam

A position further aft than the widest part of the vessel.

Abandon

The relinquishing of an insured ship or cargo to the underwriters when it is considered a total constructive loss.

Abatement

A discount allowed for damage or overcharge in the payment of a bill.

Abeam

On a line at right angles to a ship's length.

Aboard

On or within a vessel, aircraft, train, or other vehicle.

Above-Water Hull

The part of the ship's hull that is continually above the water level under normal conditions.

Absolute Bearing

The bearing of an object measured from true North.

Absorption

The assumption by one carrier of a particular charge (such as switching or lighterage) made by another without increasing the rate.

Acceptance of Goods

When the buyer takes possession of the shipment and acknowledges its receipt, usually transferring the risk of loss.

Accessorial Charges

Charges for a wide variety of services and privileges that are provided in connection with the transportation of goods (e.g., inside delivery, storage).

Accessorial Services

Services performed by a carrier in addition to normal transportation service, including sortation, packing, and cooling.

Accrual Accounting

An accounting method that records revenues and expenses when they are incurred, regardless of when cash is exchanged.

ACOL After Completion of Loading

A specific time reference used in estimating vessel departure or charter agreements.
